Velvet goddess!

On Saturday I made a pair of high waisted, velvet, black shorts!
I have been dying for a pair and I gave up searching for a pair I could afford or even liked!
So here's how the magic happened...

This is where I started, with a pair of old shorts folded . I drew round these then measured from my hip to my waist and added the length on to the top. In my case it was about 11cm.
I also added about 2/3cm on the bottom to make them a bit longer than the actual shorts, as they are a little revealing!

This is what I ended up with.

I added a 1.5cm seam allowance and then cut my pattern piece out.
I chose a black velvet/velour fabric and lay it out on my bedroom floor.
I saved a LOT of fabric by folding it only as far as I needed it, so I now have quite a bit left.
I think a skirt making session is in order!

These are my cut out pieces all pinned on the outside of the leg and ready to go!

My outside leg all sewn up.

I sewed all my edges and hems in a zig zag stitch so they don't fray, as I do not have an overlocker!

I did my hems with great difficulty and the material is all slippy and a pain in the bum!
My beautiful pink leopard print leggings there! Ha!Ha!

Hem on the opposite side.

My second leg hem, pinned with about a million pins to hold it in place!
Leggings again! I love those things! Ha!

Second hem all done and dusted!

The inside leg sewn up.

The most complicated bit of all... Sewing the two pieces together!
I had to put them right sides together and to do this I had to put them inside on another.
Then pin from one bottom leg right round the the other.
I'll admit I had a little help from my Mum to do this! But again a million pins were used! Ha!Ha!

The final pinning again!

I apologise for the bad photography and everything but this is my shorts finished and all jazzed up ready to go out and see  State of Quo!!! THEY WERE AMAZING!!!

I hope you like my shorts! Let me know what you think!

XOXO

'THE HIGH-FLYING SCOTSMAN'.

So Stella Magazine has let me into the lives of one of my new inspirations today!

JONATHAN SAUNDERS!

"Maybe it's a Scottish thing but I was always aware of Fashions pretentious image and therefore I didn't want it to be my job."

From leaving home at 16 (Which I think is brave in it's self) to study Furniture Design at Glasgow school of ART and switching to a printing textiles degree 2 years later, then leaving Glasgow to go to Central Saint Martins in London, I think the first few years of life must have been VERY exciting!
"Saint Martins was a tough experience"
Until 2003 when he started his own label, Saunders was commissioned by McQueen to make prints for his label.
He also worked for Pucci and ChloƩ.
___
Now in Islington in the North of London in a 'tall, ramshacked' building, Jonathan's magic happens with his 9 permanent workers, his dog Amber and his huge bookshelf filled with dozens of ART books! I wish I had a book shelf like this!
For these reasons and for him being an absolutely amazing designer he won Vogue's Designer Fashion Funds of £200,000!
What I would do for that amount of money! HaHa!

I think if I were to have a huge bookshelf filled with novels, art and fashion books it would have to be one like this! HaHa!
 ___

Jonathan loves textures, colours and creates historical patterns yet are very modern.
He makes and designs beautiful pieces but remembers they have to be worn by real people.

For example he has dressed Michelle Obama and Samantha Cameron.

He works with a group of women.
"It takes you out of your bubble and you realise. "OK, this thing the I've created. how are you going to wear it, what are you going to wear it with?"

___

He is showing at London Fashion Week today!!!! JEALOUS!!!
Stella asked if he found shows stressful...
He explained how the fabrics he had ordered as soon as the last collection was over would only arrive TWO WEEKS before the show! This meant he had 180 pieces to make in just 2 weeks!!!
To top it all off his models arrive from New York Fashion Week the day before the show!

"Someone usually takes me to one side he says and tells me 'You need to sort yourself out, Jonathan. You need to shave, you need to brush your teeth, quite possibly go for a sun bed to get rid of that grey tinge you've got because you've smoked 60 fags a day for the last 3 weeks.'"

But surprisingly this is the part of the job he enjoys the most!
"I thrive on it, I love that buzz. Seeing my clothes on gorgeous girls, it's so exciting."

I NEED THIS DRESS IN MY WARDROBE!

I have to say it is all very exciting! Makes me want to get stuck in and get out there!
I think this article just made me want this so much more!

What do you think of my new found inspiration? Does he inspire you too?

XOXO
